Best Use of Innovation and Technology Award Win for First Fence!

Following the success we had at the Best Business Awards back in May of this year, where we won three awards, we decided to enter the 2016 Burton Mail Best Business Awards.

On 20th October 2016 we had the privilege of attending the Burton Mail Best Business Awards at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton upon Trent. We were in the shortlist for the Best Use of Innovation or Technology Award and the Best Business Award.

The competition was tough with many local companies nominated as well as larger companies such as Nestlé, however we are thrilled to announce that we won the award for Best use of Innovation and Technology category, and we were a Finalist & Highly Commended for Business of the Year.

It is a huge honour to have won this award and we are very proud of all of our staff who have worked tirelessly in all areas of our business to make this possible and gain the recognition that they deserve.

We would also like to thank all of our customers and clients who have worked with us and supported us over the past 6 years, without you none of this would have been possible, so thank you for your ongoing support!

What did we do to win this award?
When we started looking for an alternative to the manual paper tray order fulfilment system, which we were using at the time, we found that there were no specific systems which met our requirements. General systems that were available would be too expensive to adapt and were too complicated to use, which would greatly increase training time and potentially cause us to alter in house procedures to accommodate such a system.

Instead we decided to develop our own order fulfilment system which met our own specific requirements, but could also be configured for other businesses, meaning that we were able to bring it to market where there was a clear niche for such a system.
Our in-house development team created a complex and comprehensible system which enabled us process and monitor orders in a much cleaner and efficient way as opposed to the manual paper tray system which we used before.

This system can be customised for each individual users needs and features multiple options for navigation and acquisition, making it very easy to use. Because of the versatility of this system, we have successfully marketed our product to a number of businesses, and received requests from several companies to customise the system for their own order fulfilment needs.

The success of this OFS system has allowed us to become more efficient as a whole with monitoring and processing orders, causing less errors to be made and reducing the amount of paperwork needed. This has enabled us to quickly expand and grow as a company over the past six years and we hope to expand further in the future. We believe that this software has the potential to go the distance and be the future of configurable OFS systems.

Click and Collect Service

We have recently introduced a Click and Collect Service at all of our nationwide depots. We feel it is an important factor to include when selling products online. A lot of places now have a Click and Collect Service whether it is in a supermarket or a clothing store so why should we be any different?

The Click and Collect Service gives our customers the chance to pick up their belongings in their own time without the need of waiting for a delivery driver. Collections are available at our Bristol, Dartford, Swadlincote and Tipton branches when arranged over the phone with a member of our Sales Team.

How does Click and Collect work?
So if items are ordered on our online store, there is an option to request ‘Collection’ with the branch you would like to collect from. However, if you are speaking to a member of the Sales Team, they can take payment over the phone and can organise a collection day and time for you – just let them know!

If you are collecting from our Swadlincote branch, we can take cash and card payments whereas our other depots require payment over the phone beforehand. Just be aware that we do not have payment facilities at our Bristol, Dartford and Tipton branches so it is important to make payment before collecting.

When you arrive at one of our depots, please provide the name the order was placed under and the order reference number. This will make the collection requests easier to manage and will allow us to load your vehicles quicker.

Our appearance on ITV's Lorraine

On Friday 12th August, a member of the First Fence Team was sat at home enjoying her day off with the television on, as you do. Whilst watching ITV’s Lorraine with Lisa Snowdon and Mark Heyes, little Suki the Fashion Pug came on set and accidentally escaped when the collar came loose. With the cameraman following Suki, something in the background was extremely familiar. What was it? It turns out the cameraman had captured some of our Temporary Fencing panels behind the set!

Not only have we been featured on Lorraine, we have also been spotted on Emmerdale, the X Factor and coverage of Silverstone’s Formula 1 Grand Prix.

We have included some of shots of our Temporary Fencing from the show below:

Temporary Fencing and what comes with it!

As summer is still here, we are seeing lots of different Temporary Fencing systems around the local area. The six weeks holidays are a great time to start a construction project whilst the children are off from school. Our Temporary Fencing is often used on building and construction sites as well as outdoor events like music festivals.

When visiting our website, you will have come across various offers for Temporary Fencing Package Deals. We try to accommodate for all order sizes, for both small and large projects across the UK. This is achievable due to our huge stock holding at our four depots located throughout England. By storing vast amounts of stock, it enables us to provide Same Day Delivery, Next Day Delivery and a Click and Collect service.

What Panels do we supply?
We have various Panel types available to suit all requirements and locations. Whether you are looking for brand new Temporary Fencing Panels or Ex-Hire Temporary Fencing Panels, we can cater for you.

We also have four Package Deals currently running which are:

To complete your system, we recommend assembling your Temporary Fencing structure with Couplers and Feet. This will give you a much higher level of stability and these products have been specifically designed for this type of fencing. To further enhance the stability of your Temporary Fencing system, we also offer accessories like Stabilising Bars and Anti-Lift Devices. These accessories are all available on our website and our Sales Team are more than happy to discuss any further information you may need.

Additional extras can also be added to a Temporary Fencing system such as, a Health and Safety Sign Pack, Gates or Slot Block Barriers.

Should I use Health and Safety Signs?
We would highly recommend using Health and Safety Signs when your Temporary Fencing system is built. This will highlight any potential hazards that may occur whilst on or off site. The signs themselves are made from a correx material and can be purchased as a pack of six for £40 ex VAT.

Are Gates important within my Temporary Fencing system?
Temporary Fencing Gates are ideal for systems which will require pedestrian and vehicle access. Either Temporary Fencing Pedestrian Gates or 4 Metre Vehicle Gates are suitable for Temporary Fencing systems. They are both extremely durable and are supplied with castor wheels and gate hinges for easier movement.

What are Slot Block Barriers?
Slot Block Barriers are manufactured from durable plastic and are a Water Filled Barrier. These Barriers are compatible with Temporary Fencing Panels as they just slot into the Barrier therefore providing the fencing system with more stability. The individual Slot Block Barriers are tested by MIRA testing and suitable for multiple use. We have four colour options which you can choose from - red, white, black and yellow.

Can we hire these products?
Of course, we have a fantastic Hire Service which is available through our Sales Team. We hire on a weekly basis and will offer competitive rates. Your items will be supplied brand new and can be delivered to your site or collected from one of our sites.

Do you want more information? Well, if you contact our Sales Team on 01283 512111 they will be able to tell you more about how Temporary Fencing is made (using Smartweld 100 technology) and how you can buy or hire it. We are currently introducing a Buy-Back Scheme which is also known as our 360 Plan, if you would like to see if you qualify, email sales@firstfence.co.uk and someone will be able to look into your products.

Crowd Control Barriers - The variations

We offer various Crowd Control Barriers which are all made from high quality galvanised steel. These Barriers are often used to provide a safe pedestrian traffic management system for busy and heavily crowded areas. Our Crowd Control Barriers are suitable for a range of different projects whether you’re holding a public protest or hosting a music festival.

You are able to customise Crowd Control Barriers in your company branding colours or if you just fancy a nice red, then go ahead as it will brighten up the area. We have a list of standard RAL colours that you can choose from and off the Barriers go to be powder coated. Another positive point to show is, our powder coating service gives the Barrier more protection against damage and weathering.

So what Crowd Control Barriers are available?
We currently have four different types of Barriers that we sell which are also available for hire. The Crowd Control Barriers listed below are extremely popular and are all stored at our nationwide depots.

Fixed Leg Crowd Control Barrier 2.3m and 2.5m
These particular types of Crowd Control Barriers are often used as a temporary short-term solution. Once these Barriers are constructed and form a strong shield, they are effectively preventing members of the public from gaining access to restricted and hazardous areas. Alternatively, you can use these Barriers as an entry point for a queuing system. With the Barriers basic design, they are easy to assemble and also store as they have a great stacking capability.

Loose Leg Galvanised Crowd Control Barrier 2.3m and 2.5m
Our Loose Leg Crowd Control Barriers allows you to detach the legs from the Barrier, making them easier to store and transport. Each Barrier has been galvanised to the BS EN 10244 – 2 standard and increases the overall strength of the system. Again, our Loose Leg Crowd Control Barriers are perfect for providing a pedestrian traffic management solution for all kinds of outdoor events or temporary facilities.

Police Crowd Control Barrier
Police Crowd Control Barriers are also known as Met Barriers and are a popular choice for large scale events taking place in public areas. However, these Barriers differ from our standard Crowd Control Barriers as they are a more heavy duty barricade. As it features a clever interlocking system, these Barriers are impossible to dismantle when coming into contact with the actual Barrier. This will prevent people from removing the Barriers from the middle sections.

Walk-Through Fixed Leg Crowd Control Barrier
Compatible with steel Crowd Control Barriers, this Walk-Through Fixed Leg Crowd Control Barrier has been designed to provide a temporary point of access for pedestrians. Whether you are looking for a standard galvanised Walk-Through Barrier or would like a vibrant blue one, we can do this for you! These are also a form of traffic management for outdoor events and football matches, as it provides a safe walk-through passage for pedestrians.

What are our options?
Well, as you can see from our range of Barriers that they all offer great temporary security. Whether you are looking to buy from us or hire them, we are happy to accommodate all of your needs. Our Hire Service is available at competitive prices and can be hired on a weekly basis. If you would like to speak to someone about our Crowd Control Barriers then please call the office on 01283 512111.

Box Motor Club Presentation Evening

Back in May 2016, it was previously mentioned that we supplied Crowd Control Barriers to the Swadlincote Festival of Transport and also entered three of our vehicles. On Tuesday 19th July we were invited to attend the Box Motor Club’s Presentation Evening at The Box Club, Woodville, Swadlincote.

When we arrived, we were greeted by the members and had the opportunity to take a look at the classic cars lined up in the car park. Speaking to Chris Bailey, Chairman of the Box Motor Club, he explained how the club was originally set up over four years ago from his interest in classic cars.

The Swadlincote Festival of Transport was initially launched in 2012 with over 300 vehicles taking part. Four years later, the 2016 festival saw over 600 vehicles take part ranging from classic cars to HGV Lorries. Over 10,000 members of the public visited the Festival of Transport.

Once we had found our seats, a gentleman called Keith Murfin, a local fundraiser for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance Service (DLRAA) approached us and began telling us more about the charity.

Mr Murfin is a volunteer representative for the DLRAA charity, he said:
"What a warm welcome and great to receive cheques from Swadlincote Festival of Transport, the Rotary Club and Oasis, the total amount raised £2215.31 which includes donations and merchandise sales on the day. My personal thanks and the thanks of DLRAA  go to all involved in this event."

Kim Coe, Secretary of the Box Motor Club said: "It has been a total success this year." Ms Coe explained how the money raised will benefit the Community First Responders and it will enable them to buy two defibrillators. We could hear the emotion in Ms Coe’s voice and this highlighted how important the charity is to Swadlincote and its surrounding areas.

Chris Bailey also announced that there are future plans for an upcoming festival in 2017 in Ashby-De-La-Zouch town centre.

We would like to thank the Box Motor Club for inviting us to their Presentation Evening and we look forward to partaking in future events.

Road Cones - Available for hiring

With summer approaching and schools breaking up for the six weeks holidays, lots of maintenance work will commence. When there is disruption to an area it is important to ensure the safety of both staff and the general public. Whether you are looking to hire or buy Safety Barrier Systems, we have various options available for you.

Dominator Cones
Dominator Cones are available in three heights and are great for indicating boundaries for traffic management. Consisting of a bright orange top (UV stabilised LDPE) and a Sealbrite TM R1B Sleeve, the Dominator Cone’s overall visibility is enhanced effectively.

Featuring a weighted base measuring 250mm x 250mm for stability, the two-part moulded cone has a heavy duty base which is made from 100% composite. When not in use, they are easy to store as they have a great stacking capability due to their two-part structure.

No Waiting Cone – Warden Style
A two-part yellow No Waiting Cone is a three sided cone which is ideal for use in all environments. The base is made from 100% flexible compound, this cone eliminates the need for additional weighting.

No Waiting Cone – Conical Style
Supplied in a standard yellow with a black base, this Conical No Waiting Cone is provided as a one piece cone. With a height of 500mm, this No Waiting Cone is highly visible to road users and pedestrians when an area is cordoned off.

Customisation is available on all of these Road Cones with your own lettering and logo either at the top or bottom of the cone. We provide a highly recommended embossing service which can be discussed over the telephone along with your requirements with our Sales Team on 01283 512 111.

Frontier Barriers
Frontier Barriers have great flexibility but are also stable enough to be used on an uneven surface and kerbs. With a flexible linking system, this allows the Barriers to successfully link up with other pedestrian barriers.

Specially designed to maximise wind flow and as a result of this, Frontier Cross Link Barriers are a strong and secure traffic management barrier. To minimise the risk of tripping, Anti-Trip feet are supplied with this barrier and are highly visible.

ISO Accreditations

Over the last few months we have been preparing ourselves for the upcoming ISO assessment at our Swadlincote Head Office. We are pleased to announce that we have achieved five certifications from the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 14001:2015, BS 18001:2007, ISO 27001:2013 and ISO 22301:2012 Management Standards with ISO Quality Services Limited.

This has been our first audit of 2016 however there will be an ongoing audit process which consists of two external visits per year. This will comprise of internal reviews, roughly every 6 months and an annual re-certification audit which will ensure that we comply with the requirements of the standard.

What does ISO 9001:2015 mean?
We have been accredited ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management System which is a systematic and driven approach to managing the business. The idea behind this certification is designed to support the company to ensure that standards are met and we exceed the needs of our customers. A consistent level of quality and satisfaction should be delivered at all times.

How will this benefit the customer?
  • We will be following guidelines to ensure that we are providing steady, reliable and fit to purpose solutions.
  • Taking into consideration customer feedback and acting upon this, we will continue to improve our customer / supplier relationship.
  • When an issue occurs, we will guarantee that any concerns raised are identified and resolved promptly.

What does ISO 14001:2015 mean?
Being awarded ISO 14001:2015 in Environmental Management System allows us to control different aspects of the business which have a significant impact on the environment. Using this system has been proved to highlight the importance of environmental responsibilities, including both legal and regulatory accountabilities. We must be able to manage and control any risks that occur.

How will this benefit the customer?
  • If customers and suppliers have any interest in environmental performance, we can reassure them that they are working with a company which promotes a shared environmental ethos.
  • This will also show that we will continue to maintain our forward thinking and be environmentally aware of our social responsibility.

What does BS OHSAS 18001 mean?
This BS OHSAS 18001:2007 in Health and Safety Management System enables us to control and monitor risks that can arise during day to day activities within the company. This award will enable us to be pro-active rather than re-active and will help to protect the health and welfare of the workforce.

How will this benefit the customer?
  • Completing onsite risk and hazard assessments ensure customers that our products and services are delivered within legal requirements.
  • Raised awareness of health and safety codes of practice is promoted throughout the supply chain.

What does ISO 27001:2013?
To secure the company’s confidential information, we have been awarded the Information Security Management System which enables us to manage any potential security risks to files. By having this system in place, sensitive corporate information can be efficiently managed by identifying vulnerabilities and protecting them against potential threats.

How will this benefit the customer?
  • Working with a trustworthy provider helps maintain the company’s own integrity to the safeguarding of its data.
  • Installing confidence further down the supply chain will result in stronger customer / supplier relationships.

What does ISO 22301:2012 mean?
If any serious incident occurs, the ISO 22301:2012 will offer our company the ability to continue operating regardless of the seriousness of the incident. This is becoming increasingly important to businesses. By having a business continuity management system, it will lead to greater competitiveness and decrease the amount of ‘down time’ a business will have if the unexpected arises.

The ISO 22301 also covers the requirements for a robust business continuity management system, this will allow the company to minimise risks associated with disruptions and ensures control is maintained at all times.

How will this benefit the customer?
  • Increases our ability to deliver service in adverse conditions.
  • Reduces the amount of potential ‘down time’, - i.e. reducing risk in the supply chain.
  • Issues are identified and preventative actions are put in place to avoid disruptions.

If you would like to find out more information about our accreditation, please visit the official ISO website. As we continue to grow as a company, we will maintain high standards and aim to work towards further certifications. We are extremely proud to receive these awards and could not have done it without the team’s hard work and dedication.

Best Business Awards 2016

We have some exciting news to share with you all, back in May we entered some business awards and guess what? We won three awards which is a fantastic achievement as it was the first time we had entered with this association.

The entries for the Best Business Awards are judged by an independent panel of previous winners and other business experts. There is a specific criteria for each category which every submission must meet as it is scored against this with a particular emphasis on success and innovation.

What categories did we win?
  • Best Small to Medium Sized Business
  • Best Product / Service Range
  • Best Innovation

The whole of the First Fence Team were involved in making this win happen for us. With larger companies like DFS and British Gas having entered, we are extremely happy to be featured on the same awards page as them. This is a great example of how First Fence is developing as a company and continuing to grow within the public sector.

The judges feedback for Best Small to Medium Sized Business

With all four of our UK branches in full operation, to win this award has really boosted our confidence as First Fence is continuously being recognised. By highlighting our key components, this will help us to continue offering new ways of working.

“By moving with the times and investing in manufacturing, security fencing company First Fence has become a leader in its sector. It has responded well to increased demand for security fencing in a number of sectors, including railways, by introducing new ways of working, making sure it always has stock available and opening multiple sites across the UK to speed up delivery.”

What did the judges say about our Best Product/Service Range?

We have always tried to push how important it is for us to have a 24/7 Sales Line because we want our customers to receive an instant response no matter what the time is. By doing this, we have been able to build a trusting and long-lasting relationship with our clients due to our availability and customer service.

“Congratulations to First Fence for transforming its business into a fast, responsive and competitive enterprise. First Fence has stayed ahead in its industry by having in-house manufacturing and offering a 24/ sales service, which is unusual for the building sector. It is able to deliver on time and provide a same-day service. Well done to First Fence for providing a one-stop solution and for going the extra mile for its customers.”

Lastly, how was our new system seen by the judges for Best Innovation?

Our brand new system has made order processing easier to track. Once received, each order is reviewed to identify the related tasks, these are then assigned to the relevant department then ultimately end up in a virtual ‘deliverable’ or ‘collection’ tray to be picked and loaded for dispatch. Introducing this system has highlighted the importance of moving forward with technology as using a manual paper tray system was not as slick and efficient.

“First Fence is a true pioneer in its industry because it has taken a risk and built its own innovative new order fulfilment system. The fact that at April 2016, 96.3% of orders were completed smoothly without any hitches proves the incredible efficiency of its new order fulfilment system. By having an auditable and reliable ordering system, it has supported First Fence’s rapid growth and greatly improved its relationships with customers.”

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in the Best Business Awards project. Everyone who works at First Fence has really represented the company and kept its standards at a high level.
